SAY WHAT? [A ZINE OF IDIOMS]
Ever wonder why we “shoot the breeze” or let the “cat out of the bag”? Say What? is an eight-page
screenprinted
zine that dives into the quirky idioms we use without a second thought. Each page spotlights a
different phrase, pairing its definition with its historical origin to reveal just how weird and hilarious the
English language can be.
My goal was to be informative while also celebrating the personality of each idiom. To emphasize this, I
illustrated every phrase as if it were taken literally so I could lean into the absurdity and humor behind the
words. The final zine was screenprinted to add texture and character, which felt like a fitting parallel to the
layered meanings behind each expression.
The first images shown are digital mockups. Because photography isn’t my strongest skillset, these mockups help
clearly present the full layouts as they were designed. The final images were photographed in a lightbox and
better showcase the texture and imperfections that make the physical piece unique.
